Hi Nansi,
Thanks so much for reading - and commenting! I cannot, alas, take credit for 'meatspace'. I stole that from the Twittersphere, which is They keep everything these days.

I am not sure this *post* was deep enough to have levels. It is much like a donkey (or do I mean an ogre?) in that respect, but I am delighted that it resonated with you and that I am not alone in my thoughts. Absolutely agree - I am not sure why anyone would write, or even read, fiction if not to create, or escape to, somewhere that seems entirely real. Nothing makes me happier than to switch my brain to the off position and enter a completely different world - even if other people think I am slightly odd later when I have completely lost touch with reality. Actually, once I have ventured into the fictional realm it takes a hell of a lot more effort to get back *here* than it did for me to lose myself in the first place...

Oh, BW, you really do have a wonderful way with words! (I especially enjoyed your use of the term 'meatspace' - there's something delightfully Bender-esque about that.) This post resonates with me on so many levels.* Caring enough about your characters to make them feel real is surely fundamental to the act of writing fiction; it's what makes writing addictive. Frankly, that desire to create a world - and characters - so real that we yearn to live in it seems to me the *only* reason to write fiction (let's face it - we aren't in it for the piles of cash!). After reading this, I predict I'll be muttering 'Make it real!' to myself all the way through my next novel manuscript. Thank you!

*Actually, I'm not sure I'm deep enough to have 'so many levels'. But your post still rocks.
